This workshop will raise cross-cultural awareness. It aims at improving cross-border labor mobility by offering insight in cultural differences and how to deal with them. It will make participants aware of their own cultural background and that of others. Apart from focusing on culture in general, it focuses on corporate culture across borders and cultures, with difference in leadership, organization, expectations towards employees, working methods, and more.
The first part highlights differences in cultural and corporate contexts introducing concepts such as extended civilizations, pillars versus pyramids, and insider-outsider ethics. This will reveal that people use different:
Time concepts influencing how they deal with planning, deadlines
Views on efficiency and practices of meeting, consensus, agreements, actions to be taken
Ways of communicating: direct and confrontational versus indirect, layered communication patterns, problem-solving methods
Expectations towards relationships, individual versus group, open versus hierarchical
Organizational preferences and different sorts of companies (SME, MNC)
Leadership styles (ritual leadership versus management)
Views on ownership, responsibility, assertiveness, initiative-taking, out of the box thinking
Work focuses: task-oriented versus relationship-oriented
Working in a cross-cultural team
Long distance cooperation
In the second part we analyse cases both provided by the participants (questionnaires) and other. Wrap up with insights and tips.
Preparatory questionnaires are sent out to ask examples and cases from participant’s own international practice.
In an interactive presentation theoretical concepts and the Cultural Quantum Five-Step Method are introduced.
Cases are analysed in small groups. We conclude by listing practical tools.
