The 4000 doctoral students of Ghent University belong to five doctoral schools that conduct initiatives in the following four areas:
Research quality control
The Schools offer a programme in transferable skills to back up the professional integration of the doctoral students. The focus is on academic as well as non-academic careers.
The programme includes: communication, research and enhancement, leadership and personal effectiveness, career management and entrepreneurship. The doctoral students can also participate in recruitment simulations and CV analysis sessions.
Every year, the University of Ghent organises two major events for doctoral students to get to know the job market:
"From PhD to Job Market", a meeting place for doctoral students and PhD graduates with careers outside the academic environment
"Job Market for Young Researchers" where the doctoral and post-doctoral students can meet with the representatives of about 40 companies looking to employ PhD graduates.
Ghent University collaborates bilaterally with Lille I, II and III in several fields and at every level of education and research. Lille is a preferential partner in various international projects. Since 2012, a Ghent-Lille joint invitation to tender for the internal funding of student and staff mobility was put in place. Most of these co-operative initiatives concern doctoral training.
As part of the internship section, the University of Ghent offers its expertise in international internships, which has been recently enhanced by the RECONFIRM project and in which a central platform for international internships was created in Flanders with an open portal for students, new graduates and companies wishing to hire national or international trainees. The campus of Ghent University in Kortrijk has special ties with companies in the border region in which students can do internships. But in order to stimulate students more effectively and expand the offer of internships, a structural initiative of cooperation between the regions is needed. In addition, a survey of the alumni shows a demand for a more wide-ranging offer in the area of language acquisition and training in inter-cultural skills and entrepreneurship.
